Pedicabs and Apple

March 2, 2008

I suppose the first entry of any blog is a sort of manifesto.  Why am I here?  Short of the real answer being the most difficult questions of all time, there are several less substantial reasons I am writing here.

First of all, I’m a freelance video editor and web designer who is fresh out of college.  I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in film and television and now I’m stuck with the task of figuring out what to do about it.  The other main thing about me is that I got married last summer.  I also had a massive change of heart because I finally figured out that family is more important than career My dreams rapidly shifted from being yet another Wes Anderson emulator to being a good husband, and hopefully a good dad someday.  I want to work from home.  I want to freelance.

So there’s the desire, and the reason behind the desire.  The reality of the situation is, I’m a young guy, fresh out of school with a lot of student loans to pay off.  Everything I’ve read says you need to have 3-6 months worth of living expenses stashed away before you go on such a venture as Freelance work.  Everything I’ve read is right.  You need capital because, even though all of my clients are paying me well, they’re also usually paying me late.  I have no trust fund.  I have no six month cushion. The solution for me?  Pedicabbing.

That pretty much sums up my life right now.  When I’m not in front of a computer, I’m in the streets of Savannah carting tourists to the best restaurants in town.  To be honest, it’s a pretty fun day job most of the time.  It’s also allowed me and my wife (who’s been working as a photographer) to purchase a refurbed macbook this week.  Hopefully we’ll be twice as productive since we won’t have to face off for screen hours.

The short of it is, life is good, a little bit adventurous, and very fresh at this point.  I plan to share here my day to day discoveries about freelancing as a penniless startup.  I think you’ll find it helpful.
